Janet Mills responds to the Kavanaugh nomination

Farmington, MAINE – Attorney General Janet Mills, the Democratic nominee for governor, released a video statement after the U.S. Senate voted to confirm Judge Brett Kavanaugh to the U.S. Supreme Court.

The complete transcript is as follows:

With the confirmation of Judge Kavanaugh to the United States Supreme Court today, I am more concerned than ever about the ability of the Supreme Court to protect our rights.

You know, it’s clearer than ever before that it’s going to fall upon the states to be the first line of defense when it comes to protecting the rights of working men and women;

when it comes to protecting our natural resources – our clean air and clean water here in Maine;

when it comes to protecting health care;

when it comes to protecting the very right to vote;

and when it comes to protecting women’s right to reproductive freedom and the right to safe and legal abortion.

It’s going to fall on the states to do that.

I’ve had a consistent record in all of these areas.

And I promise you that, if I’m privileged to become your governor on November 6th, I will stand with you and I will be the protector of our rights and protect all of Maine’s citizens.
